Love Style Life

Fashion missteps aren’t the end of the world. They are what makes it fun.

For my birthday, my brother bought me the book ‘Love Style Life‘ from fashion goddess Garance Doré which has turned out to be one of the best presents ever. One night in bed, I couldn’t sleep and therefore decided to start reading, but oh-my I couldn’t even put it down. Garance proved herself as funny as she is stylish.

The book also captures some good quotes, such as the one here above. To me, fashion really is a way to empower myself and (most of the time) fashion really makes me feel absolutely stunning. But.. giving in to the fashion whirlwind also means making a few mistakes from time to time..

My top 5 of fashion missteps is:

1. Vans. I think every 90’s girl has gone through some sort of ‘skater period’ in high school. Funny but oh so, soooo wrong..
2. A red leather jacket. Not that there’s something wrong with red leather jackets, but for me it’s just such a wrong fit. I remember it as it was yesterday. At the age of 12, I went shopping with my mom and she forced me to buy it. I hated the jacket instantly and ever since I get horrified by each red leather jacket I see.
3. Low-rise jeans. Thank god that this trend is slowly fading away. When you have a tall upper body and short legs (like me) it’s the worst type of pants to wear. And actually a low-rise jeans is so uncomfortable.. Imagine dropping something and having to bend down to pick it up..the horror.
4. Necklaces. Don’t get me wrong, I love necklaces and even I succumbed to the ‘statement necklace trend’. But from time to time you have to be honest with yourself and your body and let the trend pass by. Since I have a super long neck (yes, funny, I know) it’s totally not advised to emphasize (and enhance) this feature with a necklace.
5. Ponytails. Actually this isn’t a real misstep.. But at high school a boy once said to me “You should never wear your hair up, you look like a turtle.” So every single time I want to wear my hair in a ponytail I think about his comment. That’s why I wanted to say this to you: fashion missteps are super personal and subjective. It’s not because something doesn’t look good on me, that it wouldn’t look great on someone else. And it’s not because someone thinks something doesn’t look good on you, that you can’t think that you look stunning. So Garance is right..
Fashion missteps aren’t the end of the world. They are what makes it fun.

(What’s your top 5?)
